From Silk to Silicon – Jeffrey E. Garten / Springer Cartographic / HarperCollins

For his book on key figures in the history of globalization, Professor Garten needed simple, easy-to-decipher illustrations ranging from trade routes under the post-Genghis Khan Mongolian rule to transoceanic telegraph cables in 1900. Seventeen maps in all were created, in a uniform style matching the clean style of the book design. Besides map production, which was based in part on work by a previous cartographer, I ended up researching data sources on some maps—the Mongolian and telegraph cable maps in particular needed to be sourced.10-Oceanic-CableC
