Runner-up, Avenza Map Contest 2023

I was hired by Ms Rogers to make a series of maps illustrating her grandfather Tae-hyok Kim’s memoir of his life in war-torn mid-century Korea. I wanted to have some personality and a little hint of period flavor, but not the “orientalist” look that was common in mid-century western maps of East Asia. So I came up with some hand-rendered-style fonts, and then applied stock textures to the water and shaded relief. I was able to use the same water and mountain texture for all five maps, adjusting the lines and labels between them.
