The author’s haunting book about southwest Kansas and the rapidly depleting aquifers beneath it conveys a lot of factual information, but is framed by his experiences on the ground as a child of a farming family whose life intertwines with the water. I wanted the map to have a hand-drawn feel, to reflect a personal mark, but to also clearly show some important information. I ended up integrating hand-drawn and computer-textured elements in both cases.
